February 4 wrongful death bicycle accident in Modesto

On February 4 Fermin Duran Jr. was killed in a wrongful death bicycle accident on West Service Road in Modesto. Reportedly Duran had stopped in the eastbound lane when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle. Duran was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear. Duran stopped his bike just east of Ustick Road when the Chevrolet Suburban driven by Pedro Avalos approached him at 65 mph. Due to the rain and slick road conditions, Avalos could not stop the vehicle in time. Avalos and his passengers were not injured. The speed limit in that area is 55 mph for ideal road conditions.
