November 19, 2011- a pickup truck flipped over late Saturday night, on Interstate 5, just north of Bakersfield, killing one passenger and seriously injuring the other two occupants.
The truck’s driver, Steven Underwood, fell asleep behind the wheel while driving on I-5. He woke up when the truck drifted onto the center median, just north of Merced Avenue. Underwood swerved causing the pickup to cross the lanes, and drive off the shoulder. The truck then overturned into a dirt field, east of northbound I-5.
The right rear passenger, Kjerstin Underwood, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.
Steven Underwood, and the other passenger, Kayleigh Underwood, suffered moderate to major injuries. They were taken to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
The CHP reported that all passengers were wearing their seat belts during the crash.
