Highway 99 Car Accident Caused by Wrong Way Driver in Atwater

January 18, 2015- A wrong-way driver caused a car accident on Highway 99, in Atwater.  The Merced County vehicle collision happened on Sunday, at about 9 AM.

The California Highway Patrol received reports about an erratic driver in a white Dodge Ram truck, traveling on the southbound freeway.  Officers attempted to stop the pickup, but the driver did not yield and continued to drive down Highway 99.

The truck then veered across the median of the roadway and drove onto the northbound lanes into oncoming traffic.  The Dodge clipped the right side of a Chevy Malibu that was carrying three people.

The driver of the Malibu saw the pickup coming towards it, and tried to avoid a head-on collision.  The Ram truck then smashed into the side guardrail and drove off the side of the freeway, down the embankment, and overturned.  It finally came to rest on Atwater Boulevard, near Maple Street, where the vehicle then caught fire.

The pickup truck driver suffered injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno.

The Chevy Malibu driver sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
