Bakersfield and Fresno ranked among the most dangerous cities in the state for pedestrians

According to Transportation for America, a transportation advocacy group out of Washington D.C., Bakersfield and Kern County streets are the most dangerous streets for pedestrians in the state. There was a total of 39 deaths of pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, and wheel chair users in 2007 and 2008. Stockton ranked second with Redding and Fresno coming in third and fourth respectively. According to the report, 14.4 percent of Kern County's traffic fatalities were pedestrians. The report claims that factors such as wide roads, big trucks, lack of sidewalks, and heavy traffic make Kern County's roads more dangerous for pedestrians, especially those who are physically impared.
