Arturo Salgado, 24 years old, was riding his Ducatti motorcycle southbound on Highway 99. As he travelled at a high rate of speed, he moved from one lane of traffic, over all three lanes, to the third. Salgado struck the back of a Jeep Cherokee at about 70 mph.
The Jeep was driven by Erla Coulston, 86 years old. After the motorcycle smashed into the SUV, it burst into flames. Coulston lost control of the Cherokee, and the vehicle swerved to the right off the freeway, and overturned in the field.
Salgado sustained major injuries, including burns from the fire. He was airlifted to Kern Medical Center, and then to the Fresno Burn Center.
Coulston suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Kern Medical Center.
