October 30, Highway 198/Monterey County Tanker Accident
On October 30, 2009 a tanker crashed on Highway 198 in Monterey County. The crash resulted in the tanker spilling its load of liquid fertilizer. 4,200 gallons of calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) were spilled resulting in the closure of Highway 198 between Coalinga and Highway 101. While CAN is not flammable it could be explosive when mixed with fuel. Officials were trying to contain the spill in order to reopen the road.
