The driver of a 1997 Chevrolet van, Alejandro Tellez, 45 years old, was reportedly driving while under the influence. He was headed south on Highway 99, in Madera County, when the van swerved to the left and onto the center divider of the freeway.
The Chevy then flipped over many times before stopping in the fast lane of northbound Highway 99. The 19 year old, who was a passenger in the van, has been identified as Cristian Alvarez, of Fresno. Alvarez died at the scene of the collision.
Tellez suffered major injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno. Two other passengers in the van sustained moderate injuries; Jose Malaga, 29 years old, and Israel Gonzalez, 33 years old.
There were also two other passengers who have been reported to have not been hurt; Eric Alvarez, 18 years old, and Saul Jimenez, 42 years old.
Alejandro Tellez was arrested for felony DUI, and manslaughter.
