The driver of a 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, Ralph Burnside, 73 years old of Catheys Valley, was trying to merge onto eastbound Highway 140, from a north gravel shoulder. As the Toyota entered the freeway, the truck's tires spun in the gravel and caused the vehicle to skid, partially blocking the westbound lane of the highway.
A 2003 GMC Yukon SUV, driven by Joe Rosasgonzalez, of Planada, was driving west on Highway 140, when the Tundra skidded out into the lane. The GMC's driver attempted to avoid the Toyota, but the right front side of the SUV smashed into the left front side of the truck.
The GMC was carrying 4 passengers, including a 4 year old boy.
The 4 year old sustained a broken left leg and was airlifted to University of California, Davis Medical Center, in Sacramento.
Rosasgonzalez and a 9 year old girl received minor injuries, and two other passengers suffered moderate injuries. They were taken to Mercy Medical Center.
Burnside was also taken to Mercy Medical Center to be treated for chest pains.
