Jacob Garce, 19, of San Jose, was driving a 1990 Honda sedan eastbound on Highway 152, near Road 13. The driver's GPS unit fell to the floor of his car, and he reached down to get it, taking his eyes off the road.

The Honda smashed into the back of a 1997 Ford Expedition. This caused the SUV to swerve off the highway and overturned. The Ford driver and six passengers were trapped inside until emergency personnel could extract them from the vehicle.
The seven victims in the Sport Utility Vehicle all suffered serious injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno.
Garce was not hurt in the crash.
