John Hurd, 60 years old, was driving east on Highway 198, in a 2004 Ford vehicle in the fast lane of the freeway. A 2008 Acura, driven by Gustavo Pineda of Lemon Cove, was driving over 100 mph in the same direction as Hurd.

The Acura smashed into the back of the Ford, at a high rate of speed, near Farmersville Boulevard. The Ford crashed into the center median, while the Acura flipped and two passengers were ejected from the car.
John Hurd was seriously injured and passed away in the hospital. The two passengers in the Acura: Jose Espinoza, of Ivanhoe, and Tony Alvarado, of Visalia, also suffered major injuries and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno.
Gustavo Pineda sustained minor injuries and was treated at Kaweah Delta Medical.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Pineda was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
