Truck Rolls into a Canal in Kings County

January 15, 2012- a man was ejected from his vehicle in an accident, early Sunday morning in Kings County.

Keith Grimm was traveling down a dirt road, in his pick up truck, near a canal. He lost control of the vehicle. The truck flipped several times and came to rest on its roof in the canal. Where Grimm was thrown from the truck.

Grimm suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno.

The CHP have reported that alcohol was a key factor in the crash.

Car Plunges into Canal in Fresno

December 27, 2011- A car plunged into a canal in Fresno, near Ashlan Avenue and Highway 168, at about 7:05 AM.

The accident occurred on Highway 168's eastbound off ramp at Ashlan Avenue. A white Toyota Corolla crashed through a chain link fence and into the Leaky Acres ponding basin canal.


The driver was not injured in the crash.

Update: Deputy's Car Crashes Into a Canal Near Los Banos

October 6, 2011- The Merced County sheriff’s deputy that crashed into a canal near Los Banos northwest of Fresno, on Thursday, has been identified as Giovgiz Ysael.

Ysael suffered minor injuries after swerving to avoid a head-on collision with a 1990 Acura on Turner Island Road. The Acura was driven by Oscar Berumen of Los Banos.

Ysael’s cruiser hit a power pole and went into the canal.

Berumen, and his passenger, Juan Sandoval, were unharmed in the accident.

Deputy's Car Crashes into a Canal near Los Banos

October 6, 2011- A Sheriff’s deputy from Merced County and his dog suffered minor injuries Thursday evening, while trying to avoid a crash with another vehicle near Los Banos, northwest of Fresno.

The deputy was driving his patrol vehicle north, at about 6:30 PM, on Turner Island Road, south of Henry Miller Road. Meanwhile a 19-year-old man from Los Banos was driving south On Turner Island Rd., at about 60 mile per hour.

The man saw the deputy’s car, tried to slow down, but lost control of his vehicle and began swerving into the deputy’s lane.


To avoid the collision, the deputy turned to the right, but lost control of the cruiser, and hit a power pole. The patrol car then went into a canal. He and the dog both escaped the water with only minor injuries.

The 19-year-old driver was said to be unharmed.

Man from Visalia Drives Car off Bridge and into a Canal

August 21, 2011- A driver of a Toyota Corolla drove off a bridge, in Ivanhoe, and into a canal on Sunday at 6:15 PM. John Alvarado, of Visalia, and his passenger were unharmed by the crash.


Alvarado was attempting to make a turn from Charter Oak Drive onto a small bridge at Road 180, but went into the water instead. A tow truck was able to remove the car from the canal after it floated about a quarter mile from where it had entered the water.

Alvarado was arrested by the CHP for driving under the influence.

November 1 Fresno canal accident

On November 1 a man was seriously injured after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed into a canal in Fresno. According to reports the man was a passenger in an SUV driven by a man who was a wanted parolee. The SUV was southbound on Fresno Street when a police officer performed a routine traffic stop. The driver then ran a red light at the intersection of Fresno and Shields Avenue, hit a car, and went into the canal. Three of the passengers escaped from the vehicle unharmed. However, one man needed to be rescued by a diving team and the jaws of life. The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle is awaiting charges.

September 30 canal accident in Fresno

On September 30 Felix Bustamante was killed in an accident near Cornelia Avenue and West Davis Avenue in Fresno. According to reports he drove his car into a canal near that intersection. No further information is available at this time.

September 27 fatal accident near Newman in Stanislaus County

On September 27 Alonzo Ibarra was killed after crashing his car into an irrigation canal. The accident happened on Hallowell Road in Stanislaus County near Newman. According to reports Ibarra was westbound on Hallowell Road and his friend Roberto Haro in the passenger seat when he went through a T-intersection at Draper Road. His vehicle then hit an embankment and flipped over into the canal. Haro was luckily able to escape through the broken windshield, but unfortunately Ibarra was not able to get out of the vehicle. Ibarra was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

May 19 fatal canal accident on Shaffer Road near Winton

On May 19  a man was killed in an accident on Shaffer Road near Winton. Reportedly he was traveling northbound on Shaffer near Palm Avenue when he attempted to pass a flat-bed trailer driven by Francisco Ochoa. He crossed into the southbound lane to attempt to pass the truck when other vehicles in the southbound lane were approaching him. He then went back into the northbound lane and one of the rear tires of his vehicle hit one of the front tires of the truck. This caused his vehicle to spin, hit a concrete wall, and land in the canal. the vehicle was completely submerged in the canal. People passing the accident stopped and pulled the man from the vehicle. He had suffered major injuries. He was air lifted to Memorial Hospital in Modesto where he was pronounced dead. www.nelsonrozier.com

February 26 Fresno canal accident

On February 26 a man drove the wrong way on Clark Avenue in Fresno and ended up in a canal near Floradora Avenue. The man was not injured and was found standing on top of the vehicle when police arrived. Reportedly the man was unfamiliar with the area and could not see the road clearly in the rain. December 14 car recovered from a canal near Lindsay

On December 14 a car with a body inside was pulled from the Friant-Kern Canal near Lindsay near East Fir and Strathmore streets. A body was recovered from the vehicle. It is unclear if the vehicle went off the road shortly before the accident was reported or if the vehicle had been in the canal awhile.
