Hit and Run Fatal Accident in Bakersfield on Monterey Street

March 10, 2014- A hit and run car accident happened Monday night, which ended in a fatality for one pedestrian.  The crash occurred at about 11:49 PM, in Bakersfield, California.

Officers have arrested 20 year old Mario Martinez for the hit and run collision that happened on the 1100 block of Monterey Street, just west of Robinson Street.

The pedestrian, Moon Rainbow Cortez, was crossing Monterey St. when Martinez struck him and did not stop.  Cortez died at the scene of the accident.

The Bakersfield Police were led to Martinez on a tip about a car with recent damage that was parked at a nearby apartment complex.  He has been booked on accusations of felony hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, and being an unlicensed driver.

Update: Highway 180 Pedestrian Fatality in Fresno County

March 6, 2014- The pedestrian has been identified that was killed in an accident on Thursday in Fresno County.

The 61 year old woman has been identified as Leang Kim Uk, of Fresno.  She was killed on Highway 180, as she was weaving in and out of traffic in the middle of the highway, near Grantland Avenue.

The driver, Gloria Campos, that struck Uk, is reported to have been travelling at about 60 mph.  She didn't see the woman until it was too late.  Campos tried to swerve, but couldn't avoid hitting her.

Officials have said that the road on Highway 180 is not well lit, making it hard for drivers to see.

Highway 180 Pedestrian Fatality in Fresno County

March 6, 2014- A pedestrian was killed while walking on Highway 180, in Fresno County, Thursday night.  The fatal crash happened at about 7:00 PM.

The accident occurred when the 61 year old woman was walking east on Highway 180, near Grantland Avenue, in and out of traffic on the westbound side of the road.  She was hit by a car driven by Gloria Campos, of Kerman.

Campos stated that she saw the pedestrian at the last minute and tried to swerve, but it was too late to stop before hitting the woman.

Officers stated that there are no street lights in that area of the highway, so it is very difficult for drivers to see.

There is an ongoing investigation.

Laton Woman Dies While Crossing Highway 41

September 16, 2011- A woman was killed while trying to cross Highway 41, Friday night.

Carol Carleton, of Laton, was dropped off by her sister at about 9:15 PM, across the street from her home. She attempted to cross the highway and was struck by a car going south on Highway 41, near Mount Whitney Avenue.

She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. No one else was injured in the crash.

Pedestrian Struck by Car in Kerman Leads to Fatality

September 19, 2011- A 56-year-old man from Mendota was killed when he was hit by a car near Kerman, west of Fresno, Monday night.

The unidentified man was walking in the middle of the road, in the westbound lane of Belmont Avenue, east of Bishop Avenue, at about 9 PM. It is reported that he was wearing dark clothing.

The driver of a Honda, Angelica Pelaez, of Kerman, was unable to see him, as she drove west on Belmont Ave. She hit the pedestrian from behind. The man died at the scene of the accident.

After the crash the car caught fire and burned. Pelaez was able to get out of the car, and was uninjured.

Pedestrian accident on Cedar in Fresno kills one

November 17, 2010--A southbound vehicle on Cedar Avenue in Fresno struck a pestrian resulting in her death just south of McKinley.  The incident occurred at about 5pm. 

The victim was identifed as 57 year old Maria Benitez.
